Complete List of Auto Insurance Policy Discounts
As I have discussed previously, in these times many of us need to cut corners wherever we can. As the cost of insurance is already much more than most of us can afford we have compiled a list of discounts that are available to you through most auto insurance companies.
Auto Insurance Policy Discounts
How you drive, where you drive and how much you drive can give you great discounts.
If you live in a rural area your auto insurance policy rates will generally be lower than in a city. The fewer people on the road, the less risk there is of an accident.
Safe Driver Discounts: This is normally the best discount you will get on your auto insurance policy. If you have not had an accident or ticket in several years you should receive the safe drive discount.
Garage Discounts: If you park in a garage instead of on the street or in a parking lot, you should qualify for a discount. Garage parking protects your car from damage and theft. This will lower your comprehensive insurance policy rate.
Low Mileage Discount: If you don’t drive often usually under 12,000 mile a year you should be able to receive this auto insurance policy discount. Obviously the less you drive the less your risk of having an accident. You should especially look at this if you are or have recently retired. Changed jobs and drive fewer miles to work or started a home based business. Second cars, that are not your primary car, usually qualify. If you join a car pool you may qualify.
Pay As You Drive: This is a new discount offered in many states by a few insurance companies. This auto insurance policy rate is base literally on how many miles you drive and is a per mile rate. It is offered to onstar subscribers that drive under 15,000 miles a year and is based on the exact number of miles you drive. This is a great auto insurance policy for infrequent drivers and can save you as much as 54%. As this is still quite new all insurance companies have not yet started it and is not yet available in every state.
Vehicle Safety Devices Discounts:
- Automatic seatbelts
- Side Airbags and airbag shutoff options.
- Anti lock brakes on all wheels.
- Anti-Theft Devices. Electronic alarms and immobilizers that shut off the cars electrical and or fuel system. Wheel locks and VIN Etchers (that allow you to etch the vin number into the window and list it in a national registry.
- Vehicle Recovery and Tracking System:
- Automatic Daytime Running Lights: If your car has automatic daytime running lights you could qualify for a small discount on your auto insurance policy.
- Your vehicles safety rating.
- Crash Resistant Doors.
- Electronic Stability Systems EBS: Traction control systems in newer vehicles ensuring complete traction with the road and prevent skidding and spinning.
Teenager Auto Policy Discounts:
- Drivers Education
- Defensive Driving Courses
- Good Student Discounts
- The type of car you drive.
- SEE Teenager Auto Insurance Policy
Group Discounts:
You may be eligible for a discount if you are a member of a credit union, the military, fraternity or sorority, professional organization or you are a federal employee. There are many group discounts.
Defensive Driving Courses:
Taking a defensive driving course can give you a substantial discount on you auto insurance policy rate.
Green Discount:
Receive and pay you bill online instead of receiving a paper bill through the mail.
Big Brother Discount:
This discount allows your insurance company to ride along with an electronic device that actually monitors your driving. It evaluates acceleration, braking and actually tells them when you drive, how you drive and how much you drive. This is still fairly new and currently only offered in a few states. I would not recommend this if you have a muscle car.
You may need to ask for these discounts, do not just assume because you are driving a automobile with a great safety rating that you are going to automatically get a discount.
Auto Insurance Policy Discount Premium Tips
Multi-Vehicle and Multi Insurance Policy Discounts: If you own more than one vehicle you should receive a discount if you insure them at the same company. This applies to vehicles owned by you or your relatives living in the same household. Multi Insurance Policy Discounts apply when you have your home, automobile and life insurance at the same company.
Renewal Discounts: It is a good idea to get an auto insurance policy quote a couple of times a year to see if you can get a much better rate, but some companies give you discounts the longer you stay with them
How You Pay: You normally pay less if you pay your entire premium or use automatic withdrawal for your monthly premiums.
Higher Deductibles: The higher your deductible the lower your premiums. When choosing a higher deductible you can usually save the amount of the deductible in one year. Try to put that aside to pay your deductible if you have to file a claim. This is huge savings in the long term.
I believe this is a fairly thorough list of auto insurance policy discounts. If you know of anything I should add, please leave a comment.
